Edifice by Graham Winter –
Exploring Art, Archives and Architecture

Local artist Graham Winter joins forces with Heritage Vancouver and the City of Vancouver Archives to present, ‘Edifice – Exploring Art, Archives and Architecture’. The exhibition is designed as a multi-faceted exploration of the early-to-mid 20th century downtown Vancouver buildings that represent the “modern” of the artist’s childhood and are now the subject of his latest series of realist paintings.

The Art Exhibition: Edifice by Graham Winter
June 2 – August 26, 2010
Monday to Friday; 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Location: City of Vancouver Archives Gallery 1150 Chestnut Street in Vanier Park
Free Admission

The exhibition begins June 2nd and will be held in the newly refurbished City of Vancouver Archives Gallery. This quiet little gem contains the vibrant and wonderfully layered history of our city within its vaults. The exhibition will present ten new paintings of downtown Vancouver buildings done in realist style by Graham Winter, alongside a decidedly modern video wall of digitized archival photos and records of the buildings and the period in which they were built. In doing so, City of Vancouver Archives offers a richness of historical context to the paintings, which in turn offer their own chronicle of the city today.

The Panel Discussion: Iconic Constructions, Iconic Reflections
Wednesday June 9, 2010
7:00 – 9:00 PM
Location: City of Vancouver Archives 1150 Chestnut Street in Vanier Park
Free Admission - Limited Seating Doors open at 6:30 PM

The buildings portrayed in the art exhibition Edifice by Graham Winter at the City of Vancouver Archives are the starting point for a discussion on Downtown Vancouver’s iconic structures. Join Michael Geller, of Michael Geller & Associates Limited; James Cheng of James Cheng Architectural Group; Walter Francl of Walter Francl Architectural Group and Matthew Soules of Matthew Soules Architecture Inc. and Adjunct Professor, UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, in a conversation about the elements that make these heritage buildings landmarks in our downtown landscape and what they say about the society that created them.

Tangible reflections of how the city has grown up over time, these iconic structures stand as a collective image of Vancouver’s evolving ideals and identity. The panelists will also discuss iconic downtown buildings of the last 20 years and speculate on what will be on Vancouver’s 2050 Heritage Register. What, in essence, are we building today that will become the great heritage buildings of tomorrow?

Participants will have an opportunity to explore the Edifice art exhibit prior to the discussion.
