A Tour and Reception at the Wing Sang Building
Wednesday, May 5, 2010 | 5:30pm to 8:30pm
Location: 51 East Pender St. Vancouver
Tickets: $150.00 Includes wine and hors d’oeuvres. (Tax receipts will be issued)
Heritage Vancouver invites you to join Bob Rennie of Rennie Systems and Walter Francl of Walter Francl Architecture Inc. and architect for the Wing Sang Building renovation, for an exclusive guided tour of Bob Rennie’s new offices and gallery in Chinatown. You will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes to discuss the ideas that shaped the final building design. This is a unique opportunity to meet the building owner and representatives of the consultant team, tour the renovated building and the Rennie Art Collection and mingle afterwards for a reception on the rooftop garden. Scot Hein from the City of Vancouver will give the Planning Department perspective. Donald Luxton, of Donald Luxton & Associates Inc., will provide historic background information and Michelle Biggar, of McFarlane Green Biggar Architecture and Design Inc. will discuss the interior design approach.
Yip Sang, a pre-eminent early Chinese entrepreneur, originally built this as a two-storey structure in 1889, then expanded it in 1901 into a much larger three-storey building. In 1910, he appended a six-story structure to the rear of the original building to accommodate his growing business and family. The Yip Sang Building remained vacant from the mid-1970s until 2004 when Bob Rennie purchased it to house his real estate marketing office and an art gallery for his private contemporary art collection. This major rehabilitation of the Wing Sang Building, one of the most significant structures in the Chinatown Historic Area, is now complete. The heritage centerpiece, the new boardroom that was once a schoolroom for Yip Sang’s children, remains virtually unchanged.
The Wing Sang Building is currently the office of Rennie & Associates Realty, our generous host for the evening. This event is of particular interest to architects, developers, planners, decision makers and people who are passionate about the future of Vancouver’s Historic Areas.
Purchase your tickets early as there are a limited number of spaces for this exclusive event and it will sell out. All proceeds support Heritage Vancouver’s initiatives to conserve Vancouver’s built heritage.
